What did year 2015 bring to us?

Would like to congratulate all habrovchan with coming New Year and Christmas! Behind a window of our Moscow office in the heat winter: it is a lot of pools and +8 on a thermometer. Year comes to an end, and it is time to sum up the results. We decided to try to remember what appeared such interesting in 2015 in the world of IT. And as the world of IT is huge and to remember everything — a task extremely difficult (is a match unless for Schwarzenegger), narrowed the look and stopped on the following companies: Cisco, HPE, Microsoft and VMware. As it appeared (who actually would doubt) if to try to tell about all innovations of the companies stated above, it will be necessary to try very strongly. But soon holidays, it is also necessary to buy gifts, to go to cut a fir-tree, to begin to cook Russian salad. Therefore we tried to select only what, in our opinion, was the most significant for us and our customers. In any case we so hope.

So, there will be enough lyrics, begin our TOP of solutions/devices of other trifles which we selected, having separated on vendors.
What did year 2015 bring to us?

Wireless technologies

This year the main innovations of the company in the field of wireless technologies anyway turn around development of the standard 802.11ac. In particular, two new access points were provided to the market: 1850 and 1830.

What did year 2015 bring to us?

These access points support a so-called second wave (wave 2) of development of the standard 802.11ac. Support of Multi User MIMO and support of the standard of forming of the direction characteristic (802.11ac transmit beamforming) became the main innovations which appeared in these access points. As we remember, before access points could service in unit of time at the same time only one client (Single User MIMO) and the proprietary ClientLink technology (in new access points it, by the way, is absent) was responsible for forming of the direction characteristic. The functionality of Mobility Express became one more "feature" which deserves mentioning. This functionality allows to use access point 1830 or 1850 as a kotroller of a wireless network. The management to 25 access points is supported (and the series x600, x700 and, of course, x800 can be the managed access points). The main difference between new access points – a formula MIMO: 4x4:3(4) for 1850 and 3x3:2 for 1830.

The controller of wireless access 5520 which is also closely connected with the standard 802.11ac wave 2 became one more innovation. Performance (flow capacity to 20 Gbit / with, a large number of the managed access points — 1500 and clients — 20 000) became primary benefit of this controller.

Also there was a controller 8540. It even more productive is also expected absolutely large networks.

Development of the standard 802.11ac is closely connected with increase in data transmission rate. As we remember, wave 1 provides physical data transmission at a speed up to 1,3 Gbit / with, wave 2 – to 1,7 Gbit / page. At the same time channel speed (that useful flow capacity which just is also interesting to us) less and makes up to 845 Mbps for wave 1 and to 1,1 Gbit / with for wave 1. Of course, these digits are still difficult achievable. For example, "to squeeze out" a maximum from 1850 we will be needs the client who will be able to accept 4 space flows. But it is already clear: connection of access points to a wired network at a speed of 1 Gbit / with in the future will become a bottleneck. Already now access point 1850 has two built-in ports of 1 Gbit / page. Therefore the Cisco Catalyst Multigigabit technology actively began to develop (is based on the NBASE-T standard). She allows us to transfer the categories 5e/6 given on the twisted pair cable (i.e. to use the current cable network) at a speed of 1 Gbit / with, 2.5 Gbit / with, 5 Gbit / with, and 10 Gbit / page. Support of this technology appeared on some models of the switches Catalyst 4500E, 3850 and 3560-CX.

Unified communications

This year practically all major versions of software products in the field of UC were updated (UCM, UCCX and so forth). Also schemes of licensing for some of them, in particular, for the solutions Telepresence (Multiparty Licensing) were updated.

The new platform for the solution Business Edition 6000 was provided. Now there was an opportunity to implement BE 6000 based on Cisco 2921 router about a blade the UCS E160D M2 server. BE6000S (quite so it began to be called) supports up to 150 subscribers. It is at the same time possible to start five UC applications: Unified Communication Manager, Instant Messaging and Presence with the Cisco Jabber, Unity Connection, Prime Collaboration Provisioning and Paging Server. The new BE6000S option can become alternative to the old solution Unified Communication Manager Express (UCMe). It is known that the solution UCMe does not develop for a long time, and the vendor is always recommended to build solutions based on UCM product.

This year the line of phones was replenished. There was rather budget (if, of course, this word is applicable to products of the Cisco company) phone 7811. It possesses the built-in two-port switch, the graphics display, a full-duplex speakerphone and a set of the necessary selected keys. All this is enough to paste to it a tag – the applicant for "standard phone for the ordinary employee".

There were new phones with the built-in camera 8845 and 8865 (HD 720p is supported).

Switches and routers

Part of lines of Cisco switches this year were updated. For example, the line of switches 3850 was significantly added. There were models with 24 and 48 ports of 10 Gbit / with and models with Multigigabit ports. It became possible to install in these switches modules with ports of 40 Gbit / page. Also new switches of the fixed configuration of 6840-X were provided. On functionality they are comparable to switches 6807/6880.

What did year 2015 bring to us?

It is separately possible to mention emergence of new switches for SMB with ports of 10 Gbit / with (it sounds, of course, funny: 10 Gbit / with for SMB). The speech about switches 350X and 550X.

If to speak about routers, then essential changes by us it was not noticed. I can only note that the module list for installation in routers 4300/4400 extended.

Data processing centers

This year active development of the Cisco Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) technology which is a SDN solution for creation of the TsODa networks continued. There were available many information materials on this technology.

Also the new switches Nexus 3200 were provided. One of models supports connection at a speed up to 100 Gbit / with (ports can work at speeds of 10G/25G/40G/50G/100G). At the same time the switch is delivered in the fixed configuration.

For a set of the companies, the subject of control of the user traffic played new paints in the spring of the expiring year: since April 14, 2015 the Microsoft company officially stopped the main support of the Forefront TMG proxy server. Someone was prepared for it in advance, and someone in panic is systematic and without excess vanity began to look for replacement of TMG on boundless open spaces of opensorsny and commercial NGFW, UTM and Web proxy solutions. One of such solutions is Cisco FirePOWER. Besides that there were new Cisco ASA models with the FirePOWER services (5506X, 5508X, 5516X), this year innovations were entered:

  • Management of the FirePOWER services through ASDM (it is natural that with a number of restrictions so far).
  • SSL decoding for Cisco ASA with FirePOWER Services is added. It is available to all ASA 5500-X series. Earlier given functionality was available only to iron aplayns of Cisco FirePOWER NGIPS with version 5.4.
  • There was Captive Portal and Active authentication. Such functionality can help to bypass the existing problem with authentication of users of terminal servers. Cisco positions this functionality as addition to passive authentication with means of Sourcefire User Agent.

All this and many other things were added to version 6.0 of the Firepower services which became available to downloading in November of this year.

As we already noted, this year the MSE ASA new models were provided: 5506X, 5508X and 5516X. All these devices more productive in comparison with predecessors also differ in the fact that in them the SSD disk is preset. So they "from a box" are ready to start of the FirePOWER services. New cloud solutions on safety were announced (Cloud Access Security, OpenDNS Umbrella and so forth), familiar for a long time products are updated (ISE, AMP and so forth).

Would like to note that innovations appeared also in other areas. For example, there were new models of servers, solutions of the Internet of prophetic (IoT) continued to develop actively. In general updates concerned practically all solutions.

I think, readers were already a little sated with the Cisco company and it is time to betray relay of HPE.

The HPE company this year added family of data storage systems 3Par. There were new lines 3Par 8000 and 3Par 20000. Upon this updating of the current line (have to replace 3Par 7000 and 10000 respectively): new "iron", more productive. Solutions are constructed on the updated generation of ASIC'OV (Gen 5), more memories have more productive processors (by a cache). The architecture of controllers of new SHD is ground under work with flash-arrays. As the internal bus to disks SAS of 12 Gbit / page is used now. And external ports FC of 16 Gbit / from steel the standard for these systems.

The HPE ConvergedSystem 250-HC StoreVirtual system became one more innovation in the field of solutions on data storage. The solution is included into family of the program defined data storage systems. This SHD is under construction based on the HP ProLiant servers, system of virtualization VMware vSphere or Microsoft Hyper-V, and also specialized software of HP StoreVirtual. The solution consists of three or four nodes. One node supports to 7,2 Tbyte. It would be desirable to remind that the solutions StoreVirtual had the name LeftHand earlier.

What did year 2015 bring to us?

This year the company continued updating of lines of the servers. The speech, of course, goes about servers of the 9th generation (Gen 9). In particular, it would be desirable to pay attention to new models of the simplest rack servers – DL 20, DL 60 and DL 80. In the conditions of the current currency course realities of our country they can be rather interesting. Servers DL 60 and DL 80 support installation to two processors (Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3) and 256 Gbytes of the RAM. However, these servers are completed only with one power supply unit.

What did year 2015 bring to us?

Acquisition of HPE of the Aruba company became rather significant event this year. In this regard the line of wireless solutions has to undergo big changes. As all of us know, Aruba is one of key players of the wireless market. This vendor has also wire solutions (switches, solutions on safety and so forth). Therefore it is possible to expect practical complete "overflowing" of a product line of Aruba in the HPE portfolio.

 The Aruba company provided the new access points of a series 320 supporting  the standard 802.11ac wave 2. These access points provide data transmission at the physical control layer for the range of 5 GHz at a speed up to 1,7 Gbit / with (4 space flows are used). They support  the Multi User MIMO and Transmit beamforming (TxBF) technologies.

What did year 2015 bring to us?

For this year updates happened practically in all solutions of the HPE company. For example, the line of the equipment of backup was updated and added (support of LTO-7 appeared). The HPE Synergy system was announced: integrates network and computing components, means of storage and the managing software (a certain similarity of the blade server) in one body. Server solutions for resource-intensive calculations (including Big Data) – HP Apollo and HP Integrity Superdome X are updated. There were new switches and active development of the program defined networks (SDN) continued.

What did year 2015 bring to us?

Separately would like to note a new line of the switches HPE Altoline. They first of all are expected installation in TsODe (have ports of 10 Gbit / with and 40 Gbit / c). These switches are a disaggregated solution for open networks (Open Networking). And it means that on this switch we can install any network operating system. For example, this line is completely compatible to Cumulus Networks Linux NOS.

Now let's pass to innovations of the Microsoft company.

This year the Microsoft company released the new version of the client operating system. The krossplatformennost became feature of Windows 10: now we have the unified OS, as for the Xbox One console, the smartphone, and for the normal PC. It has to simplify development of universal applications (Universal Apps) for new OS (once developed and works everywhere).

The new version of enterprise mail system Exchange Server 2016 was also submitted this year and differs from the predecessor in the updated architecture. Exchange Server 2016 became initially available in a cloud. In general, present policy of the company such is that at first products appear in the cloudy environment and only then in the form of solution on-premise. This year confirmed this thesis.

What did year 2015 bring to us?Besides, Microsoft did not forget about the platform of the joint communications Microsoft Lync which not only was updated to the new version, but also changed the name to Skype for Business (Skype for Business). For last year new mobile clients of Skype for Business for all main platforms were let out (Windows Mobile, iOS, Android). The desktop client within Office 2016 in which integrated possibilities of creation of fast meetings, carrying out demonstrations and obucheniye, improved the user interface is updated. In the solution Skype for Business there was more dense integration with the Skype services (now it is possible to call them and to write from the corporate client of Skype for Business) and opportunities for consolidation of different systems of a video conferencing.

Also this year we saw the updated Office 2016, including Office 2016 was updated under Mac OS X (the previous release was even in 2010). Upgraded version of the Visual Studio of 2015 was provided.

The Microsoft company announced emergence of two more significant products (moreover there is already technical preview): server operating system of Windows Server 2016 and the updated family of products System Center 2016.

The new server operating system promises to be rather interesting, especially in respect of virtualization (Nano Server, will appear Windows Server and Hyper-V containers, the enclosed virtualization, will be improved the scheme of updating of clusters Hyper-V, Storage Spaces Direct and so forth).

It would be desirable to note that with Satya Nadella's receipt, Microsoft soared up into clouds and continues to soar there. For the last year the majority of updates was connected with cloud platforms (the present motto of the company — cloud first, mobile first). Essential updates concerned Office 365 (Azure ExpressRoute, Mobile Device Management, PowerBI and so forth), possibilities of Microsoft Intune, Mobile Application Management and Azure extended.

What did year 2015 bring to us?

This year the Vmware company submitted the sixth version of the product vSphere. From the most interesting innovations of this version it is possible to select the following:
  • Long-awaited support of continuous availability (Fault Tolerance) to virtual computers from 4 vCPU is implemented. However, there is an unpleasant moment – the maximum edition of vSphere Enterprise Plus is for this purpose necessary. For editions of Standard and Enterprise it is possible to include Fault Tolerance only for VM from 2 vCPU;
  • Virtual Volumes (VVols) — the new principle of storage and alternative to the VMFS file system. In the future, perhaps, VMware will be able to refuse volumes vmfs for benefit of Vvols. The vendor so describes the new concept: "The solution vSphere Virtual Volumes is the new structure of integration and management providing virtualization of arrays of SAN and NAS thanks to creation of effective operational model which is optimized for the virtualized environments and is oriented to features of the application, but not infrastructure.";
  • Support of instant clones (Instant Clone): operation is executed 10 times quicker, than in the previous versions;
  • The improved scheme of migration of virtual computers at the configured replication between platforms (Replication-Assisted vMotion);
  • Possibility of migration of virtual computers between vcenter'ami (Cross vCenter Migration). Quite useful functionality for those who have geographically distributed infrastructure of vSphere from several vCenter of servers.

Other products were updated this year also: Horizon View, Site Recovery Manager and so forth.

What did year 2015 bring to us?

This year was complete of new developments. Not everything, of course, appeared on shelves of shops of our Homeland. Only managed to report about something, something else passes certification. The part of solutions actively is already used.
