In our blog on Habré we considered a question of influence of relevance for cloud services. But how the situation in area of technologies of data storage is? As Moore's law influences their evolution — Wired edition material is devoted to this subject. We present to yours the main theses of this note.

Each 10-15 years the industry of data storage undergoes serious transformation. Last time it occurred in the late nineties when storage networks appeared (SAN, storage area network). Emergence of this technology allowed the large companies to receive high availability, redundancy and other important characteristics. Now, transformation happens around the Flash technology, but it is not it per se, and in the accompanying evolution of other elements of data-centers.

Moore's law formulated still in the seventies the last century claiming that the number of the transistors placed on an integrated circuit chip doubles each 24 months meanwhile works. In 1970 the speed of processors made 740 kHz. Based on Moore's law today we is had multi-core processors which speed is measured by gigahertzes. This drama break performed for last four decades promoted development of new innovation technologies, like the same virtualization.

Unfortunately, performance of traditional drives on hard magnetic disk drives did not grow at rates, comparable with increase in processor speeds. As a result the certain "gap of performance" between CPU and HDD which are usually used in architecture of SAN and NAS was formed. Traditional approach to overcoming of this gap assumed consolidation of considerable volumes of such HDD. The main idea was that the amount of a disk on which it is necessary to look for data is less, the performance is higher.

However development of the innovation technologies which became possible thanks to increase of performance of processors made this traditional approach senseless. For example, in the virtualized environments, often one of the main problems is ensuring read performance and record. As a result, permanent adding of disks for ensuring requirements of new technologies, does their application less profitable to business.

Finally, it leads to restriction of further innovations. As a result the industry of data storage is urged on by need of transition to model of estimation of cost for IOPS, but not for gigabytes. It is absolutely new approach to a financial assessment of new technologies, and it can promote including to broader use of Flash-memory which was considered too expensive earlier.

Flash much quicker, than HDD, and with its help it is possible to receive in one thousand times more IOPS — as a result that gap between performance of the processor and memory, it will be reduced far quicker. All this will promote that use of the accompanying innovations will become more profitable to business, so more resources will go for further developments.

Flash-memory was always more productive technology in comparison with hard drives, but to it nedostatavat properties of scalability and the general data accessability which are required in large SAN environments. Prompt development of cloud computing allows to hide these minuses of flash, considerably expanding opportunities for creation of infrastructure.

Moore's law continues to move the market of processors forward, and revolution in the field of a flash memory can push the industry of data storage forward. The large companies understand it — in particular, not so long ago we wrote about the developed Samsung extremely high-capacious hard drive (16 TB) using technology a flash memory 3D NAND:

Besides, the new technology a flash memory is developed by the Intel and Micron companies — it is called 3D Xpoint which is reconsideration of the accepted concepts on work with memory. Instead of using transistors (as it is accepted in traditional a flash memory), 3D Xpoint uses the microscopic grids of wires connected with the help of "selectors". Information is stored in intersections of wires (from here and the name of technology).

According to statements of researchers now they can create chips on this technology which will be about 1000 times faster a flash memory in iPhone and can store up to 10 times more given than DRAM memory in PC, servers and notebooks. Besides, this memory "is not volatile" — it means that the new technology can save data even if the computer is powered off.

Implementation of such technologies — business of quite close future. At the same time, it not the only direction of innovations in data storage area. For example, not so long ago we published material about the most perspective technologies of storage — and among them experts called in particular, tape drives (for example, from Fujifilm) and genetic storages.
