4 reasons to risk to pass to program defined TsOD-u

For the last 3 years only the federation of EMC has helped to unroll program defined TsOD-y in more than 1000 organizations worldwide, having completely saved the available infrastructure, having optimized its use for ensuring business processes. And according to the made supervision, in most cases come to the similar decision of the company quickly and even it is unexpected for itself. Therefore even if now the program defined TsOD (further for brevity — POTsOD) seems to you something very much exotic, do not hurry to renounce its implementation. Risks of carrying out serious changes in the IT organization are intuitively clear. In this article advantages of transition to POTsOD and 4 common causes of their creation in the organizations are considered.

That represent program defined TsOD-y, in general knows everyone. And, though in nuances there can be discrepancies, each dear IT vendor orients strategy of the portfolio of solutions in line with the help to the customers in conversion "normal" TsOD-ov in the program defined. Thus, first of all, it is about economic benefit of customers from such transition. However, in the course of justification before business of need of this transformation with enviable regularity there are difficulties. It is not surprising if to consider complexity and complexity of interrelation of one world with another. The bearded joke how the son has asked the father programmer is remembered why the sun ascends in the east and sets in the West. The answer "if it works — touch nothing", well characterizes reality. It is shown, first of all, that traditional business, in broad understanding, over and over again is exposed to attacks of the young and impudent startups scooping energy, opportunities and even business ideas from the new IT directions. There are a lot of examples. Look at applications in the smartphones. You will see there few "the normal companies" in which many of us, by the way work.

Adult players or try to adapt vigorously under new realities and to save competitiveness, or most often go forward by inertia while it is available. The tragedy of IT divisions is that, having powerful arsenal of means for creation of new model of technical ensuring breakthrough of business forward, they often have no corresponding device to initiate this process in the company. And business, here and there, already perceives IT specialists as fans of expensive toys. Though it throw up money from time to time, but for a long time do not try to understand, to what pipe they depart year after year. And so far as concerns serious changes not only architecture, but also business processes — here chances to agree are almost absent.

It is no secret that serious changes in infrastructure or business processes often become the reason of some critical failure, or even series of failures. And it can have unpleasant long-playing effects in the presence of high load of infrastructure.

Therefore in spite of the fact that for many specialists program defined TsOD-y have, at least, in the theory, number of advantages, in practice the few decide to unroll them. Besides, it is impossible to take and replace just like that components of the available infrastructure, having started with a clean slate. Process of transition demands careful considering and design taking into account the available processes and architecture. Therefore if start pushing to these changes, there is natural resistance.

In Russia with it it is even more difficult, with ours in "the special way" and "the Russian specifics" which is not understood "in the West". The matter is that we, seeing itself from within and looking at the western IT models according to their advertizing leaflets and press releases, we draw conclusion that we with them not simply very different, but they in general aliens. And everything that is good for them, for us, for people of Earth — distant space. Held the same opinion also I, have not understood yet that though the gap between "our" and "their" IT is, but it far not space is great. So, perhaps, we have something to take for themselves from their advanced development, having subjected, if necessary, to critical judgment. Further I suggest to consider and analyze four arguments in favor of transition to POTsOD-u.

But at first I want to remind of what features modern implementations POTsOD-ov possess:

  • The automated expansion of virtual computers, network resources, storage resources. Speed of expansion and providing new services increases. There is opportunity to use global politicians for management of worker processes, including, for example, setup of backup, trust relationships policies, network parameters. Disposal of set of other routine.
  • Automated management of data storage levels. High speed of work with data is provided, when saving expenses on storage at the acceptable level. Possibility of use the politician of SLO for management of storage.
  • The automated monitoring. Providing information on status of services in real time. Administrative process of POTsOD is facilitated. Thanks to efficiency of reaction and possibility of pro-active monitoring, reliability, availability and productivity increases. Thanks to increase of overall performance of service operational expenses decrease.
  • Transparency of use of resources. Opportunity precisely to evaluate costs of support of services, correctness of calculation of consumption of resources by different divisions of the organization. Decrease in risk of unreasonable overconsumption.
  • The automated protection against failures, including automatic recovery. Prevention of failure of service, or acceleration of its return. Decrease in risk of error of the operator during recovery.

Thus, POTsOD — this interesting technical solution significantly facilitating life and simplifying the execution of different tasks which is potentially allowing to reach providing IT services to business new level. However, both "at us", and "at them", the real hardkorny specialists are not tired to repeat that they can make "the same the hands, for salary". In it there is the truth. Moreover, at if to come to managers with attempt of justification of similar solution, at best we will face sincere misunderstanding. Like, "earlier you demanded money to do the work, and now you ask money that not to do work".

It turns out that the situation to go to POTsOD has to ripen, at least, to that status when business "cannot live on old". And in ideal when also IT on old does not want any more. And such tendency gradually develops.

For years of work with various customers certain statistics on circumstances which after all push the companies to expansion at themselves POTsOD is saved up worldwide. Give we will look at them closer and we will try to try on on ourselves.

Reason No. 1. Problems with productivity in combination inefficient use of infrastructure


From all reasons, this, perhaps, the most widespread, including in Russia. Because it is seldom possible to meet the IT head who actually precisely knows, what applications and how many resources consume, and in detail. The situation when resources are selected under critical applications proceeding from their peak requirements, plus some stock is widespread. That organizational processes and infrastructure allowed to be arranged under dynamically changing loading, it is necessary to evaluate timely how to provide maximum efficiency of use of resources. In typical architecture of POTsOD the special software automating or, at least, facilitating this process are for this purpose used.

Some solutions allow also to provide management, to establish cooperation and to automate resources even if they are bought from different suppliers.

Once there was case when at one of big customers have found number of the applications working with storage of the class Tier 1 which after assessment of profile of loading have transferred to storage of lower level without any performance penalty. It has brought to the customer economy in the amount of $5,2 million. I do not think that such it would be succeeded to make easily, IT infrastructure of this customer be rigidly tied on hardware levels. And here with use of POTsOD — easily. In the Russian practice we too had such similar case. Only it has as a result appeared to us not to laughter because the customer has joyfully reduced the volume of purchases of our iron. However, he was very grateful to us.

Reason No. 3. Employees of IT are overloaded with work, the set of the personnel is suspended, and requirements grow


Most often management of data-center is automated poorly. Sometimes everything is reduced to sending warnings of achievement of certain level of use of resources by this or that node or application. In the presence of branched infrastructure on which the set of applications with different requirements and restrictions for use of resources is unrolled, the analysis of all these warnings demands a great lot of time, human attention and correct reaction.

One of the most important advantages of POTsOD in solution of this problem is use global the politician and gradation to the automated selection of resources according to them. Classification of applications already in itself is very useful action allowing to define white spots of infrastructure. And when it will be possible to select resources on the basis of the received classification and to measure success of achievement of service levels — the opinion of business on IT will improve.

On the other hand, there is opportunity to use the released people for solution of more useful and important tasks, having provided them the instrument of management much бόльшими volumes of resources. For example, according to data of Gartner, on average one employee operates with data about 250 TB. By results of cooperation with number of the largest service providers, implementing the concept of POTsOD, this indicator increases to 600 Tbyte, and in some cases — to 900. Further, thanks to deeper automation, the boundary of 1 Pbayt will be passed.

Reason No. 4. "Shadow IT"


Today use of public clouds by the enterprises spreads. Yes, in Russia too. For example, for ensuring flexibility of development. Often it even is secretly welcomed as many developers do not believe that on forces it is effective and favorable to them to use own IT services. Internal IT systems of the company — it is expensive to them, long and sometimes poor. Therefore they use public IT resources at discretion, and that the most unpleasant — without permission and control of the IT services. For example, for minimization of risk of uncontrollable increase in prices for services of external services or insufficient stability of their work to evaluate the potential of expansion of own cloudy storage. According to our experience, use of the program defined storages not only does not concede on flexibility to external services, but in some cases manages up to 25% cheaper. Besides the infrastructure of service is completely under your control.

In summary


Transition to new form of the IT organization is caused, generally the following factors:

  1. Need continuously to solve problems with productivity, combined with desire more effectively to use IT infrastructure.
  2. The requirement to maintain compliance of service levels of applications and the physical resources provided to them.
  3. Aspiration more effectively to use the human resources which are available in IT in situation of constant pressure "on top".
  4. The growing risks of "shadow IT".

POTsOD — it is not simple TsOD consisting of the virtualized equipment. It is automation of routine operations, decrease in risk of human error and ensuring service levels. This effective use of the available infrastructure and more structured understanding of expenses on IT.

Certainly, not always similar transformation can happen only at the initiative of IT division. Without understanding and support at the level of business it is hardly possibly to hold similar events. But it already other history.
