Hi, Habr! Today we would like to tell you about junior representatives of known line of the HP ProLiant servers who treat the ninth generation of products. These are reliable "working horses" who are intended for small and medium business. Servers from model range of Gen9 have not bad proved for solution of different simple tasks to which the small budget, as a rule, accompanies. Successors of the Compaq brand, they adequately keep in comparison with more powerful colleagues and will rejoice the name Hewlett Packard, so well-known in the "server" world.

However, there is enough lyrics. Meet heroes of our today's material: HP ProLiant DL60 and DL80 Gen9 intended for placement in rack and "two towers" on pleasure to admirers of tolkiyenovsky "Lord of the Rings": HP ProLiant ML10 v2 and NR ProLiant ML110 Gen9. The first three treat the NR ProLiant 10 series which has been added to the directory of the HP servers quite recently therefore these models simply have no predecessors from the eighth generation. As for the NR ProLiant ML110 Gen9 server, it is one of junior representatives of the "100-th" series who is positioned by the company as "the first server" for those companies where earlier exclusively desktop computers were used.

It is known that now the HP company lets out products for three series: 10, 100 and 300 which differ on construction, reliability and power.

Younger series are distinguished by the compact size (for placement it is used small racks to 24 inches) and the simplified cooling subsystem, which dictates restrictions for use of powerful processors. At the same time talk on weak "stuffing" is inappropriate, after all in basis of new servers the processor microarchitecture of Intel Haswell owing to what 12-core Intel Xeon E5 2660 in third generation is supported even is put. Besides, availability of 8 slots for modules of memory of DDR4 allows to pump over at restriction of 32 Gb on level system to 256 Gb and even to separate flows when using dual-processor models which are available along with single-processor servers.

If to speak about network capabilities, models of the tenth series are equipped with two built-in gigabit Ethernet-ports. At the request of the user functionality of the server can be expanded by means of separate network PCI cards and adapters. The HP company has also built in program raid controler of v140i which provides support of drives with the SATA interface "from box" therefore the user cannot reflect on separate purchase of the module and the corresponding license for its full work. If really high-performance solution and support of SAS disks is necessary, it is possible to buy in addition, for example, the controler of line of HP Smart Array or host adapter of the bus (HBA) which allows to implement possibilities of the RAID controler.

From minuses of younger series it is possible to note, for example, limited number of slots of the PCI-E standard and lack of the built-in solutions of this sort on the host board. However, those tasks for which solution junior representatives of line of the HP ProLiant servers are intended, and do not demand connection of large number of additional modules – for this purpose there is the same series 300 where it is possible to install network interface cards, without having involved any slot of PCI-Express.

One of the most available representatives of the "tenth" series at the price perfectly is suitable for the enterprises of small and medium business which need the server for the selected hosting and typical business applications. The model is also used for solution of different simple tasks: printing, different processing of files, message exchange.
Besides, HP ProLiant DL60 Gen 9 has well proved in the cloudy environment and at collaboration of users. Despite the low cost, the server it is equipped with basic tools for monitoring and management which are usually inherent in models for corporate sector.

The model is executed in form factor 1U and is able to work with two processors (restriction – 12 kernels and heat release of 105 W for each chip). Eight slots for DDR4 SmartMemory modules allow to set to 256 Gb of memory with increase perspective to 512 Gb in the nearest future when modules on 64 Gb are provided.

Installation to 4 disks of large format – 3,5 inches (LFF) is supported, and both hard drives, and solid-state drives (SSD) can be used. For management here, as well as in all models of servers of the ninth generation, standard means are intended: iLO 4 (iLO Management and Intelligent Provisioning), UEFI BIOS and REST API that allows to use HP ProLiant DL60 Gen 9 in large numbers, for example, at creation of server farms.

The developer positions it as the available server storage with the low price of data storage (at the rate of the cost of 1 Gb).

This model can be used as e-mail or file server, and also the domain controler, it will cope with the majority of operations of small business and basic tasks web and IT infrastructures. One of advantages of HP ProLiant DL80 Gen9 is that with the license software from Hewlett-Packard the server can be used for effective data storage. As you could already notice, the vast majority of technical characteristics of the server match parameters of younger model that is not surprising. The main difference is here the form factor 2U thanks to which it is possible to set to 12 "large-format" hard drives LFF and SSD. At the expense of it the ProLiant DL80 Gen 9 server "will make friends" with especially "gluttonous" applications which for installation of normal work need a lot of disk space. Also this inexpensive model has on three slots of PCIe more, than HP ProLiant DL60 Gen 9 – in total 6.

This tower model represents excellent server solution for the small and medium enterprises thanks to the compact sizes, almost noise-free work and opportunities for cheap expansion of functionality. As it was already mentioned in the beginning of our overview, the server from easy hand of marketing specialists was entitled "the first guy on the area" "the first server at the enterprise" which as is impossible by the way will approach if the small company needs transition to the full-fledged server.

Despite the small sizes of the body which height sostavlit 4,5U, technical characteristics of the server leave the most pleasant impressions: 8 slots are available to the user to memory modules with the maximum capacity of 256 Gb, to 5 slots of PCIe, to 8 disks of the LFF format or to 16 disks SFF.

The main difference which is evident is, of course, processors. It is curious that the E3-1200 model which was used in the HP Proliant ML310e Gen8 v2 model, represents slightly advanced version of the desktop Core i3 processor which is much worse optimized for "server" work, than new CPU E3-1600 and E5-2600. Also favorably transition to memory DDR4 and 8-fold gain of the maximum capacity from 32 Gb to 256 Gb has affected increase in productivity of new model.

One more serious change is increase in quantity of disks which can be set in system, exactly twice. Possibility of connection of 16 drives of the SFF format commands respect for this inexpensive server. Let's note also "graphic" potential of new model – at the request of the client the server can be equipped, for example, with the video cards Nvidia. As a result of considerable changes concerning functionality of the server also the body sizes, however have increased at the same time possibility of rack-mounting has remained.

Thanks to certification according to the American ASHRAE A3 standard the server can be used without problems at temperature up to 40 degrees Celsius and relative humidity to 85%. Certainly, it is desirable to provide the HP ProLiant ML110 Gen9 models more comfortable operating conditions, however it is possible to be quiet for safety of data even in the hottest days, say, during repair of the household conditioner.

Now it is a high time to tell about appearance of the server in brief. The vendor releases two different chassis ground under use with disks of different form factor, that is the user selects in advance, with what disks it will work – SFF or LFF. Except numerous slots for disks, on the front panel HP ProLiant ML110 Gen9 it is also possible to see the special slot for installation of the optical drive, and also 2 USB ports 3.0 in the lower part.

Component layout in the body standard, and the attention is drawn by the radiator of the impressive sizes intended for passive cooling of the processor. In general to implementation of SO there are no claims: in addition to the main case cooler on back edge there is possibility of installation of additional fans in the center and the lower part of the chassis – on case of adding of large number of drives and connection of "hot" expansion units (for example, video cards).

Contrary to the low price of HP ProLiant ML10 v2 provides the due level of fault tolerance, possibility of flexible setup of the server and expansion slots for creation of data storage system. The server is equipped with the Intel Xeon E3-1200 processor in third generation (about 4 kernels are supported). HP ProLiant ML10 v2 allows to use to 4 modules of memory of DDR3 by means of which the maximum volume in 32 Gb is reached. It is also worth mentioning possibility of connection of impressive quantity of 3,5-inch (LFF format) disks – 6 pieces. Server management is exercised by means of corporate software of iLO Management 4.

It is remarkable that this model has completely borrowed the body and all main characteristics at HP ProLiant ML310e Gen8 of the eighth generation about which we have already told, comparing the last to the follower, the ML110 Gen9 model.

As we see, the updated HP ProLiant ML10 v2 model has received a little changed construction, has got USB 3.0 ports, the new network interface card 332i and support of bigger quantity of disks. Changes have affected also model of guarantee support. In aspiration to make the server the most available to purchase the company has made decisions to clean from packet of the main guarantee possibility of free service of model in the territory of the user, that is at emergence of any problems with product the client should visit the service center Hewlett-Packard.

Let's look at the server more fixedly. On the front panel there is basket for drives (unfortunately, possibility of hot replacement is not supported). Here it is possible to find room for 4 disks, 2 more pieces can be set in the corresponding slots located in upper part. As option, it is possible to use them for installation of the optical drive. If it is necessary to involve 6 disks and DVD-ROM, for the last there is option of internal connection by means of special tapes. Behind behind case grid the power supply unit and system cooler were placed. Except them, on the back panel 4 USB ports of different standards (2.0 and 3.0), 2 network the interface and VGA video output are located. In the lower part the iLO port optionally can be located. Unlike the senior colleagues, this server does not support possibility of selection of the certain canal for "managing" traffic.

If to glance in the server, the power supply unit body located in upper part of the body and the passive CPU cooling system which hides NR SmartSocket – the "smart" socket developed by the company for prevention of the wrong installation of the processor as a result of which at the last legs often break at once is evident. Thus it is not necessary to use traditional disks with the utility of HP SmartStart as all software and drivers are already preset on servers. Updating of drivers and microprogram providing servers is carried out by means of the HP Smart Update Manager technology and packet of HP Service Pack for ProLiant series servers.
